According to a recent survey by iProspect, on search engine loyalty, almost 50% of internet users have installed a search engine toolbar of some kind on their computer.

Search engine toolbars have become a mainstay for the internet user. They offer a number of features that are convenient and time effective for searching the web.

But which toolbars offer the best features?

The Google Search Toolbar – offers basic features such as a pop up blocker and quick access to Google Search. The Google Search Toolbar also includes a highlight and word find button. Two particularly useful features unique to Google are the auto fill button and the PageRank bar. The auto fill button eliminates the need to type your personal information into web forms, while credit card info is password protected for added security. The PageRank bar indicates a sites overall popularity at a glance.

The Yahoo Search Toolbar – provides quick access to yahoo search as well as other standard features, i.e. pop up blocker. If you sign into your yahoo account through the toolbar a bell appears for new email notification.

The MSN Search Toolbar – also provides the main features of other toolbars such as pop-up blocker and access to MSN search. It also launches hotmail, msn messenger and my msn.

The AOL Search Toolbar – shows the number of messages you have if you have already logged into AOL software.

The statistics show that the Google, Yahoo and MSN search site toolbars are close in the running. But it really depends upon which search site you use on a regular basis as to which search toolbar you choose.

Many of the search toolbars for smaller search engines require you to download additional software onto your computer before making use of some of the features. Be aware, as some require an annual subscription. Its also a good idea to read the terms and conditions carefully, as some may try to collect data on your surfing habits.
